We are offering daily swim lessons for our campers which take the place of one morning activity period. Campers will participate in a 30-minute American Red Cross instructional lessons, with a 20 minute free swim period. Program & Theme Summaries:
5-9 Year-Old Campers
For our younger campers, we are introducing a few improvements in the 2018 schedule. Many of these ideas came from current campers, parents, and staff. We hope you’ll be as excited about them as we are.
To start, we will be offering shorter program periods to better engage this age group (45 minutes rather than 60). This also will allow us to offer more programs each day. Additionally, as we work to provide opportunities for personal growth and independence, we are offering a new “Choice Period” every day after lunch. Campers will have an opportunity to choose from several program options each day.
With these changes, we are still committed to ensuring that our campers have the opportunity to swim each day in our new pool, and try their hands at 7, core programs with their tribes each week (Climbing, Crafts, Hiking, Nature, Sports, Target Sports, and Teambuilding).
10-14 Year-Old Campers
Our older campers will see big changes in 2018. While they will continue to swim daily, and have the opportunity to participate in 5, core programs with their tribes once during the week (Arts, Climbing, Nature & Science, Target Sports, and Teambuilding), they will have 2 or 3 periods each day that are their choice. If they desire, our older campers will be able to work through our new “Coin Program”, earning tokens as they move through 3 levels in selected programs (Archery, Boating, Climbing, and Nature). For a more in depth description, please see the Parent Handbook.
Summer Super Heroes:
In addition to our traditional programming (archery, climbing, swimming, etc.), our campers practice their super skills in preparation to battle the forces of chaos and save our camp.
Star Wars 1 – Jedi Training:
Campers begin the week as Padawans who are preparing to begin their Jedi training. Throughout the week, these Padawans are challenged through daily Star Wars camp activities along with traditional camp activities. Our campers are truly the New Hope.
Around the World in a Week:
We invite our campers to visit the countries and cultures of our summer camp counseling staff. Sports, Songs, Games and Food from around the world will be shared as we learn and grow together.
*Wizards & Demigods:
Each day of this special holiday week will feature another fictional world in children’s and young adult literature. Retrieve Poseidon’s Trident and return it to Camp Half-Blood with Percy Jackson. Hunt down the Deathly Hallows with Harry Potter. Solve the mystery of the Maze with the Runners. Test your archery, knife, and tracking skills as a Ranger’s apprentice.
*Due to the abbreviated week and nature of the themes, this week of Bynden Wood Day Camp will have a vastly different schedule than the other nine weeks of the summer. While every camper will have the opportunity to climb, hike, and shoot archery, they may spend less time at these activities. The swimming schedule will remain unchanged.
Wild, Wild West:
Welcome to the Old West. Start your week with a Gold Rush, protect the bank from bandits, and celebrate your success at the camp square dance. They’ll be roping, dancing, and even a sharpshooter contest.
A Pirate’s Life:
Become a Pirate-In-Training (or a PIT), and learn from the Pirate King. We’ll start the week with your pirate name, tackle obstacle course elements on sea and land. There will be challenges, swash-buckling, and a daring mutiny. Don’t miss the glorious return of this piratical camp week.
Wet & Wild:
This week promises to be both Wet and Wild. We’ll get wet with special water carnivals and games. We’ll get wild with Mike the Critter Guy and his amazing animals.
Star Wars 2 – Clone Wars:
It’s time for our young Padawans to grow and tackle a new menace. Throughout the week, these budding Jedi will be challenged to complete their training while battling back the clones army and saving the galaxy.
The Imaginarium is what you make it. Each day will bring a new challenge: new machines to build, myths to bust, and art to create.
Meet your team, pick a color, make a flag, and let the games begin. One of our most popular weeks of the summer, Color Wars is an opportunity for children of all ages to compete in classic camp games with a lot of laughs along the way.
